My family’s home was largely destroyed by fire on Friday September 20, 2013. Over the last day and a half we have come to understand how different this story could have been. The fire was caused by a neutral wire coming loose at the connection to our property when it was hit by a fallen tree. This apparently sent 220 volts of power to our entire home. This then made everything that was plugged into an outlet a potential source of ignition. Since the fire most likely started in multiple locations it came on fast. Our neighbours actually heard the tree fall on the power line. From what we understand there was about 10-20 minutes between the tree falling and the first 911 call. By this time there wasn’t much the fire department could do.
We feel very blessed to have been out of the house before this happened. We are so relieved that this day was a garage day for our dogs. We believe that God has shown us great mercy in the midst of this crazy event.
What has happened since the fire has been the most tearful and joyful 40 hours of my life. We thank our loving God for each and every person that has touched our lives over this time. Immediate family, dear friends, and folks we’ve never met have shown us remarkable love. They have met needs before we were even aware. With each knock on the door, email, instant message, phone call and tweet I am blown away by the generosity, care and compassion of so many people. I can only hope that I am made more aware of where I can be used to do the same for others in the future. My family is completely covered by love.
