The Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM

After some consideration I decided to sell my Tamron 150-600mm f/5.6-6.3 and replace it with the new Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM. So far I’m impressed. A lot.

The Tamron performed quite well in good lighting conditions. It performed best a little less than wide open and a nice fast shutter, even with image stabilization. This new Canon seems crazy good with just the opposite. This shot of Harley is wide open (at 400mm) from about 1.2 meters away. The shutter speed was 1/60 of a second at ISO 1600

Disclaimers: This isn’t a particularly special photo, just a quick test shot. I’ve compressed it down to 2280px wide. I turned up the exposure one stop in Lightroom and increased the highlights a bit. I didn’t do any noise reduction or sharpening.

I can’t wait to get out and really take advantage of this lens. I’ll also try it with a 1.4X teleconverter.
